Danger Zone

More EDF work. Remember how they didn't bring a ladder to do our work? Well, they were supposed to disconnect the old wire that led from Alex's parent's house to our house (see photo). The connection was made pretty high up and there was no way that our regular ladder would make it. At the end of the day one of the men came and said that some of their colleagues would be coming by with a huge ladder to disconnect it all:

Me: You mean later today?
EDF: No, not today but soon.
Me: So maybe tomorrow?
EDF: Well, maybe not tomorrow...but soon.
Me: Ok, well, could someone call before they come so we can make sure to be here?
EDF: Um, no, they probably won't call before coming.
Me: What if we're not here?
EDF: .....

The next day they did turn up at 6:30pm, which both Alex and I thought meant they either weren't part of a union or that they had eaten such a late lunch that they actually didn't get any of their jobs done and were trying to catch up.

They quickly got their ladder set up and told us to step back in case one of them fell (!!) or something else fell. I pointed out that the tuffeau on the side of the house was very old and cracked and would easily crumble under the weight of a man and a ladder. Yes, yes, we see it lady, we're not stupid!!!

CRASH, WHACK....lots of dust and swearing. A huge, jagged piece of stone about the size of my head came crashing down and missed one of the guys by about 7 inches. Everyone kind of stared at it and then the men looked at eachother and the following conversation occured:

1: So whose going to go up the ladder?
2: Well, you could go up and I'll hold the ladder.
1: Or you could go up.
2: You're sure you don't want to go up?
1: (sigh) Ok, I'll go up.....

Pardon My French said...

Pretty funny and scary at the same time! Their discussion was shorter than I expected it to be.
